In 1852, crews began laying rails through this region of the Blue Ridge. The line between Lynchburg, VA and Bristol, TN was completed in 1856. The Parkway crosses the railroad about 0.7 mile south of the overlook and the railroad and US 221 pass through the valley just to the left of Wildcat Knob.
